Meet Zach McCleery
Boise Native, Black & Gray Realism Tattoo Artist at Chariot Tattoo Studio
From Pencil Sketches to Professional Tattooing: The Story Behind One of Boise's Emerging Tattoo Artists
Some artists discover their passion later in life. Others seem to have been born with an instinct for creativity. For Zach McCleery, artistry has always been a part of who he is.
A Boise, Idaho native, devoted family man, and Christian, Zach brings a unique combination of natural talent, discipline, and genuine passion to his work as a professional tattoo artist at Chariot Tattoo Studio in downtown Boise.
A Natural Talent for Art and Design
Zach's artistic journey began long before he ever picked up a tattoo machine.
As a young teenager, he spent countless hours drawing, developing an impressive ability to create detailed pencil and charcoal sketches. What began as a hobby quickly revealed an extraordinary eye for design, composition, shading, and artistic expression.
His creativity extended across multiple mediums, demonstrating a natural understanding of how to bring an artistic vision to life.
But perhaps what sets Zach apart most isn't simply his natural ability. It's his mindset.
When Zach commits himself to learning a craft, he doesn't settle for being good at it. He's determined to become one of the best.
An Apprenticeship Under Award-Winning Artist Tony Ritter
Zach's introduction to tattooing began when he developed an interest in getting tattoos of his own.
After researching artists, he sought out Tony Ritter, an award-winning black and gray realism tattoo artist and owner of Chariot Tattoo Studio.
What started as an appreciation for Tony's work eventually developed into something much bigger. Zach approached Tony about the possibility of an apprenticeship, and Tony recognized his potential.
Under Tony's mentorship, Zach began studying the technical and artistic foundations of professional tattooing.
His progression was remarkable.
From detailed pencil drawings to practicing on synthetic tattoo skins, Zach demonstrated an exceptional ability to absorb instruction, refine his technique, and apply what he learned.
He advanced through his apprenticeship faster than nearly any emerging artist we've seen, eventually graduating to tattooing his own clients.
Developing His Own Signature Black & Gray Realism Style
Although Zach trained under Tony Ritter, his artwork has developed a distinctive identity.
Specializing in black and gray realism tattoos, Zach's approach is characterized by soft, seamless gradients, delicate shading, and an almost pointillism-inspired quality.
His work balances realistic detail with subtle transitions, creating smooth, timeless compositions that feel both refined and artistic.
Rather than simply replicating another artist's techniques, Zach brings his own creative interpretation to every piece.
His natural understanding of composition and design allows him to transform clients' ideas into thoughtful, custom tattoos.
